Student forced to shut down blog after libel threat

Reporters Without Borders today expressed support for a student in Singapore forced to shut down his blog on 26 April for fear of a libel action by the head of a government body and warned that "such intimidation could make the country's blogs as timid and obedient as the traditional media."

"Threatening a libel suit is an effective way to silence criticism and this case highlights the lack of free expression in Singapore, which is among the 20 lowest-scoring countries in our worldwide press freedom index," it said. "We especially support bloggers because they often exercise a freedom not seen in the rest of a country's media.

The threat of prosecution came from Philip Yeo, chairman of the government's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), which grants research scholarships, who claimed it was libelled in a blog ( www.scs.uiuc.edu/~chen6/blog) by Jiahao Chen, a Singapore student finishing his studies in the United States. Writing under the pseudonym of Acid Flask, he criticised Yeo and the A*STAR scholarship system. He also agreed to his remarks being reproduced in the online Electric New Paper (http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg). Yeo sent him several e-mails demanding that he delete all blogs mentioning him or A*STAR and threatening legal action if he did not.

A few days later, Acid Flask shut down the blog and posted a message of apology to Yeo in its place. Other Singapore blogs that had reproduced the remarks quickly afterwards posted apologies or themselves closed down.

If it is, how scary. I thought somebody said we should start a newspaper or a blog for politcal commentary? So how now? Square One?

Equality

A Norwegian and possibly world's first.

A woman has been convicted in an Oslo court for raping a man. This judgement is unique because the argument has always been that the man has to be willing to attain an erection and hence cannot be rape since the sex is "consensual".

The man in question was drunk, who woke up to find his rapist sucking him off. He went on to accuse her of rape.

Now, I don't know who is sillier, the man or the woman? Haha.

Read about it here.

Blog Down

I stumbled on this blog via Tommorrow. He gives a 9-11 on how to prevent yourself getting sued. Must be a lawyer. Catch his blog before it shuts down!

Bush Whacking

How to know your Commander-In-Chief is a moron.

You can just imagine him saying, "Oh yes, I see it now..."

Can you believe this guy is in-charge of the world's largest nuclear arsenal? Die lah. Posted by Hello

Political Commentary

If politics bore you, stop reading this post.

Minister of State for Defence and National Development, Mr Cedric Foo shocked the ruling party a week ago when he announced that he was leaving politics to return to the private sector. This came as a shock because he was part 0f the "Super Seven" rising stars who became junior ministers after the 2001 General Election.

The Party Chairman has tried to calm the murmurs and has commented that there is nothing surprising, with this being part of the natural 'turnover' of staff.

I question this though. In the last decade or so, there were only 2 'ministers' who have 'resigned' to return to the private sector. The last one being Mr David Lim. Coincidentally, he is now CEO of Neptune Oriental Lines, the same company that Mr Foo is joining.

I wonder if NOL is a 'cold storage' for 'retiring' ministers? NOL has always had a strong link to the ruling party. Our SM was there till he was convinced to enter politics.

What do you think?

P.S> This view is of my own and not meant for forum discussion nor speculation. I do not have the intention to defame anyone nor serve to offend. If you have any misgivings, please leave your contacts in the comments page.

P.S2> My rumour grapevine has hinted that there will be one more minister 'retiring' soon. Watch out for it. Hint: Goat

Kiss One

A kiss is such a beautiful expression of one's emotions, a sending of a charge across to the one you love.

Here are the two most famous kisses ever captured on film.

This, of a sailor returning home after the Second World War was taken in Times Square, NY. You can literally feel his longing for his girlfriend by the passion in his kiss. He wants her, badly. She is bent, uncomfortably, but she doesn't mind, cos he is finally home.

This is beauty, on celluloid. Posted by Hello

Kiss Two

This photo, taken in Paris was part of the reason the city was coined the most romantic city in the world. It shows a pair of lovers, in a seemingly spontaneous kiss in the streets.

It is a goodbye kiss, but not a farewell kiss. It says I'll miss you, will be thinking of you, and will be longing till the next time we meet, kind of kiss.

The original of the photo was recently sold by the lady in the kiss. Apparently, the kiss was posed and the photographer did send a signed copy to the couple a few days after. I think, even after finding out that it wasn't a 'natural' kiss, it still doesn't take away the magic of it. I guess we humans are all the same - looking and holding on to the notion of romance.

SMU

I spent the day with Sa in SMU. And I must say that it is the most beautiful of the local Universities. I liked the colonial feel to the place. With buildings with their original fixtures, gardens that if you close your eyes and imagined, you could probably see British colonists playing cricket...

It was quiet, peaceful and full of soul. Its a pity they are going to tear it down. Is nothing sacred in Singapore? Posted by Hello

Fear

Let not the shackles of your past hold you back from your future.
I am here, and I will promise to listen and to understand.
Take your time because I will be patient.
Do not worry, and do not be afraid.
Do not fear, cos I am here.

It is Out There.

I've met someone. And I'm on Cloud9.

She's beautiful, with deep emotive eyes.
She's funny, with an infectious laugh.
She's intelligent, and really blows my mind.
She's sexy, and she knows it.

I'm so lucky.

Swimming

There something I just love about swimming.

Besides it being a great low impact exercise thats easy on my joints, I also love the feeling of weighlessness as you float in an alien medium. Its absolutely relaxing and familiar - like returning to your mother's womb. I think swimming, with your head underwater is a great place to collect one's thoughts and to think. Its a silence not found on terra firma and there is nothing I enjoy more than doing leisurely breast strokes and humming a classic, like Mozart's No. 5 whilst blowing out bubbles... and apparently since water carries sound better than air, don't be surprised if you suddenly hear music as you are swimming one day.

So I've been around trying different neighbourhood pools. Here's what I think of some of them.

Clementi - Nice pool with enough deck chairs, but too many gay men. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not homophobic, and I do have gay friends. I don't mind if you look at me from across the pool, or from a deck chair but really, its kinda rude to stare at my butt as I'm taking a shower. So, please stop.

Hougang - Too many screaming school kids taking lessons, who swim breathwise instead of lengthwise resulting in you either having to stop mid-stroke or risk getting kicked in the face.

Serangoon - Only 2 pools - one adult one wading, resulting in everyone young and old being crammed into the big pool. Nothing irks me more than slow swimmers in the fast lanes. Other than that, this pool has the highest bikini factor.

Bishan - So far, this is the best pool I've found. Except that the water in the competition pool is oddly salty. Weird.

So, have you swum recently?

P.S> The other good thing about swimming is that you get more from it than normal exercise. Being tanned makes one look fitter than they actually are. Ha.

Blasphemy

I've been quite vocal about religion since certain incidents in my life. For example getting dumped by the someone I loved because her cell-group said that I was dragging her to hell (cos I didn't believe in her God). I think they also said something along the lines of, "Why spend mortal time with him if you guys are going to be apart in eternity?"

How Poetic.

Rubbish.

Anyway, since then its been looking at things through a different lens and inevitably being very critical about religious practices and fanatism. I know this is uncalled for, more so because I am half-Taoist and we have even MORE weird and out-of-this-world rituals. But... its become so fun its hard to stop. It does help if you have friends who are able to laugh and add on to your blasphemy.

Its like how when RC and I were in Vienna and one of the Kings had collected a vial of Mary Magdalene's milk. It was prominently displayed in the Cathedral for all and sundry to see, much like Buddha's tooth in Thailand. Upon leaving the exhibit, RC and I were walking out and he suddenly said in all seriousness, "I wonder if it's cheese by now?"

Lightning has a 4m kill radius. So you might like to walk away from me. You have been warned.

Forgive Me But I Had To Do This...

This is nuts. Apparently somewhere in a Chicago underpass, there is a stain on the wall formed by rainwater leeching road salt that 'the faithful' claim is an image of the Virgin Mary.

Oh come on! This is getting ridiculous. Look at it! Does it look like anything to you? Maybe I haven't been touched by the Holy Spirit but really, if that is the Virgin, then there are wall to wall murals of Her in Singapore's canals.

But it doesn't matter to the people who claim they can 'see' cos there is even a shrine there now! Is faith blind?

Today's Peeve

Its the middle of the night, you are bored. You switch on the television. What's worse than catching the 'live' telecast of the NKF show - with all its shameless begging and screaming?

A repeat telecast.

They won't let you forget the show was done. They even show it on TV Mobile. Its mind numbing, really. And really gets on my nerves.

Today's peeve: Endless reruns of the NKF show.

Can You Tell Me?

Can someone tell me if PM and SM are both out of the country? Or is there a reason why MM made THE casino speech 'live' on television last night. The speech can also be found verbatim in today's new paper.

So if possible, can someone please answer me?

P.S> Or if PM or SM were in the country, then its says something that MM made the speech eh? Haha.

In the News

There has been a spate of National Kidney Foundation bashing going around in Blogosphere, and I would normally jump onto the bandwagon. However, I've decided against it. Call it superstitious or irrational if you want, but I do believe in karma and I don't really want a situation where I have to swallow my words if (touchwood) one day my kidneys do fail.

So, with great restraint...

1. I do agree that its bad to encourage donations by dangling a reward to 'encourage' the donor. This removes the whole altruistic value of charity.

2. I agree that the donors should be told how much they are donating with one phonecall. Sneakily, it is now possible to chalk up $50 from one call because it 'donates' ten times.

3. I agree that all monies donated should be given to the charity. Why should there be a few cents for GST and an administration charge for dailing in? The answer? It's because the telcos know how much money NKF already has and hence cannot be bothered to absorb the cost. They are dealing with NKF as a commercial entity and not a charity.

4. I agree with the saying that we have to spend money to get money. Hence NKF is one of the only 'charities' in Singapore who can come out with $1 million to commission a show with MediaCorp. For a $1 million investment, they get back a net profit of $5 million. Sounds like good business to me. However, by having such a show annually, and with reserves of up to $300 million, they are being selfish in taking a BIG slice of the charity pie. Why don't they form a trust with the money they already have, and with the permission of the Minister invest in low risk funds? Sure, low risk = low returns, but at $300 million, its enough for you to run the centres.

5. Ever wondered why most NKF centres are linked with temples or churches? That's because NKF doesn't pay for everything and the 'partner' shares the cost. So ever wonder where your money goes to?

6. There is a rule by the National Council of Social Services at least 70-75% of all money spent has to be spent on charitable purposes. I suppose thats why NKF goes around commissioning drama serials (education) and putting in money for the charity show every year. They have to. If not, there is no where to spend their money. That is also part of the reason why they have started the Children's Medical Fund and the Cancer Fund. There is not enough avenue to spend the Kidney money. Think about it. The National Kidney Foundation is branching into child diseases and cancer. Isn't that blurring their constitution?

NKF. I applaud you for for business acumen. But I honestly think you are greedy and too fat for your purposes. I'm supporting Kidney Dialysis Foundation instead.

Cheng Hu

On the threat of the Internal Securities Act and how they can hold you without trial for the rest of your life, this is all I have to say about the Integrated Resort.

Our Cheng Hu damn steady. Ai Lai Chi Pai Lai. Not one but two! 10,000 jobs, here we come!

If You Have a Minute Today

If you are Male, hot-blooded Singaporean, over the age of 18, you will find this interesting.

If you are a Female, then avert your eyes. Lest it bores you. Well, probably except for the first article.

Here.

Why Palm?

A friend recently asked me why I still use my Palm m500 and why I haven't upgraded to one of those mobile phone/organisers/ mini entertainment machines. I thought for awhile and this is what I said.

1. I don't want to have to hold a brick to my ear when I take a call. It looks funny and blocks peripheral vision - hereby increasing the chances of my getting run over.

2. It allows me to leave it at home on the nights I don't need an organiser. Like on the nights out on the drink.

3. Palm still gets free Straits Times on its Avantgo.

My Palm is a life-saver. I'm scatter-brain and without it, I'll probably miss all my appointments, forget everyone's birthday and have nothing to read when I'm (inevitably) waiting for someone to show up.

A Collection of Thoughts

Rench msn-ed me last night to remind me to watch what I say on the Blog cos of the incident of the PSC scholar being screwed righteously after passing certain 'comments' on his. The worrying thing is that his blog was 'private' and password protected but still its contents went public in a forum. Scary.

I have nothing to write today, partially cos I'm moderating myself, so here's a collection of what random things went through me head during the hours of 11am - 3pm today. This might bored you. So feel free to close the window.

1. Wonder if Shan is doing ok... she's starting something new today.
2. Wonder if Ed is alright at his new job. He's started today as well.
3. Ruud scored twice for Man U last night. My dad can be Alex Fergerson already. His most common advice as a living room coach is to always telling the strikers to 'just whack' whenever the goal is in sight. Apparently it has worked for Ruud.
4. Need to open the Recruit pages.
5. Why is my gluteus maximus aching?
6. Where is my Top Gear CD?
7. Hungry, need to forage for food.
8. Wonder if there is a new Pope yet? Time to watch the Beeb.
9. Haven't seen Su and gang in awhile. Should call them.
10. Need to do that thing for Rench later.
11. Nice new blogs linked by brown, miyagi and cowboy. Interesting reads.

This is like a list of things I have to do today. Haha. Sorry for wasting your time.

Late Night Call

She called as I was getting ready for bed. She sounded flustered, almost drunk. I knew she had been out with her friends the whole night. Was she alright? She said she wanted to see me. I jumped out of bed, threw on whatever was nearby and ran to the main road. A short cab ride later found me running around the carparks. She said she was there. I couldn't see her.

Finally, I found her sitting in a dark corner. She was clearly happy to see me, as I was her. She wasn't that drunk afterall. I asked her if she wanted to go home. She said no... I looked into her eyes, I knew what she meant. I wanted her so badly too.

I woke up this morning with a beautiful creature by my side. I pinched myself twice just to be sure. She's gorgeous.

P.S> This is a creative piece of work and should not be taken literally of incidences that may or may not have occurred.

Got a Minute?

Got a minute to spare?

My reaction?

Oh dear.

Somethings are Better Done in Groups

Have you ever realised that jokes sound better in groups? I was reading a joke book today and I realised that its no fun laughing by yourself (people may think you are nuts) and hence you keep it in. Thus losing out on the whole vocal expression of laughter and the effect of the joke.

Jokes are more fun shared. Agreed?

Simple Happiness

Too often we take what we have for granted. We forget the simple happiness in life, many which happen day to day, in the most common of situations. For me,

Happiness can be...

Sucking the yolk out of a perfectly fried sunny-side up egg.
Gulping a chilled drink on a hot summer's day.
Coming home hungry after a long day, only to see your mother has kept the leftovers for you.
Completing that impossible to finish level in Need For Speed Underground 2.
Watching footie on tele at 3 in the morning and seeing your team score its way into the UEFA finals.
Realising that in spite of your flaws, your family don't bear grudges and still love you.
A good night out on the drink.
Crawling into bed after a night out on the drink.
Telling someone you are attracted to her and she says she likes you too.

I'm happy today. Are you?

Weird Dreams

This is from a friend who MSN-ed me this afternoon to tell me about her dream.

Anon says:
i woke up at 710 switched off hp alarm went back to sleep for 5 more mins. during that 5 mins i dreamt i was making notes on a building plan in pencil. then i realised it was an original and decided to rub off my notes to make copy first. as i was rubbing off the notes, i woke up to find myself rubbing my hp on my tummy.

Farnee hor?

This is what happens when you work too hard. Haha!

P.S. Her nick is not Anon, just in case u were wondering. Duh!

I Want A Clean Fight

As expected, the headlines of today's National Newspaper is a response to the letter by AP Lee. Apparently the mother of the twins is 'really upset' because of AP Lee's letter and says that she loves the children dearly. It has been confirmed that the father did run out on the family 2 years ago (the bastard) - wonder if he took any of the Singaporean well-wishers' money with him.

It is interesting to note that though many Doctors 'disagreed' with AP Lee, no one wanted to be quoted. I guess we've been brought up with the idea that NO ONE GOES AGAINST A LEE in Singapore.

The majority of the anonymous people 'interviewed' in the streets also disagreed with the good Doctor. Some actually said Doctors should not play God. Ha. Irony. If doctors were not allowed to play God, then think back to the Neanderthal times, where a lot of people would have died because of no access to medicine or health care.

AP Lee is a good person. The HOME section of the paper quotes her as having no problems with seperating the Indonesian twins joined at the hip. She says that with their brains seperate at birth, seperating them now would only give them a better quality of life. I agree.

P.S. The papers say she is a single woman. No she is not. She is a divorcee. It goes to show that even within the most powerful circles in the land there is still the fear of discrimination of having had a failed marriage. Goes to show what the Govt says is not always what the Govt believes. (eg. the Casino)

P.S2. The views held are entirely my own and are expressed as such. There is no intention to defame or to spark libelious discourse. Please don't sue me. And worse. Please don't send ISD officers to my door. Thanks.

P.S3. France has just passed a Bill allowing the Right to Die. This is not euthanasia but the right to refuse treatment. Hooray for human rights everywhere!

Chiling

Getting too serious, time to put up random picture of chio bu. Lin ChiLing. Taiwanese model. Dating Jerry Yan. Posted by Hello

You MUST Read the Forum Pages Today!

There is a letter in the Forum pages today entitled.

Plight of the Nepalese Twins - 'Successful Operation was a mistake'.

This was with regards to the successful operation of the conjoined twins.

The author of the letter wrote that how she, as the Senior Consultant of the National Neurology Institute had advise her neurosurgeon against operating on the Nepalese twins because she knew that even if the surgery was successful, the twins would be mentally handicapped for the rest of their lives. She added that, "A handicapped baby is cute. A handicapped adult is a burden."

She felt that the operating neurosurgeon who consented to doing the operation was not being responsible for to the parents. Even if the operation was a techinical success and even if the surgeon attained 'worldwide fame', the lesser evil would have been to let the twins die (inevitably) and let the parents move one with their lives, and have more children. 'Normal' children.

She hints that now, though the operation was a success, the family is now broken up, the father of the twins has abandoned them and now the mother is left with caring for two handicapped babies, who will grow up and have to depend on carers for the rest of their lives.

Sure, Pro-Lifers would say that what this Doctor has said is really cruel, that we don't have a right to end someone's life. But then its the Schiavo incident all over again. Then do we have a right to artificially continue a 'life'? I think quality of life matters. Not life in itself.

More importantly, the writer has raised a voice of disagreement, she has come to shell what Singaporeans have seen as a successful humanitarian act by shedding light on what we as the public don't see. What has resulted from the 'successful operation'.

She is the voice of a conscience. She is Associate Professor Lee Wei Ling - the daughter of our Minister Mentor. I applaud her for her courage to speak up based on her conscience.

P.S. She hints there that was some improprietary on the part of the consulting neurosurgeon, that he did not fully explain to the parents then that their children would be permanently disabled. Bitch fight (and apology letter) beckons. She is brave I tell you.

Orchids

I think orchids are beautiful. And they last longer too. Why don't women appreciate them instead of roses or lilies? Is it because they are tropical and we generally think more highly of anything "expat"? Hmm.... Posted by Hello

I Think We Need an Enemy

Ever wonder what we can do to forge a national identity?

Lets look and learn from the countries who actually have a history they can speak off. 1819 and Raffles does not a history make. Nor is 40 years of developing ourselves into a nation. History is created by events like William of Orange, the Boston Tea Party, the French Revolution. In short, strife seems to make countries forge an identity. That is something we as Singaporeans lack. We have led a relatively sheltered existence, save the Japanese Occupation. But then again, the ones in-charge of our defence was not even us, but rather the British. Hence it’s more like part of their history. Proof? Till this day, speak to the old Britons and they would still have colonialist memories of defending Fortress Gibraltar and Singapore. Heck, we don’t even one a piece of Old Changi Prison and instead are giving parts of it to ex-POWs and museums in Britain!

Well, nothing can change the things that happened in the past. So lets look to solutions. Watching Keith Floyd’s cooking show on the television last night gave me inspiration. He said, “I’m not crazy. Can’t be, I’m British.” It reminded me of the Nationalistic pride that all Brits had. Speak to them about the French, and the reaction you usually get is, “The French? Poof. Bah. Onion eating smelly farkers.” This is especially obvious during football season. In fact, the Brits have little regard for most other Continental European countries. Spain? Bah. We paid for most of their public work projects by way of EU taxes! Germany? Bah. Bloody Nazis who need our Sterling to pay for their Eastern history. Italy? Bah. The only thing BLUE about their football team is their balls. The list goes on.

I say. To unite Singapore, to forge a national identity, we need a common enemy. Nationalistic pride always makes for good citizen bonding. Americans have ‘invisible’ terrorists, the Chinese and S. Koreans now have Japan, Iran has the Big Satan et cetera. So what can our ‘enemy’ be? It seems obvious, but to say it, I risk the Internal Security Dept opening a can of whoop-ass on me. Haha.

What do you think?

P.S. Its sad when on Discovery Channel 16, Megan was at some international fair in Dubai and the Singapore store was selling framed long swords. It gets worse. The frames had Product of Singapore engraved in Chinese. WTF? How can that be a Singapore Product? We really need an identity, need to have a culture that we can call our own. Soon.

Drink Dialing

I drunk dialed last night. Or did I not? Alright, this is where it gets confusing.

It was drunk dialing cos I had some wine whilst watching Jaime Oliver.
It was drunk dialing cos normally I wouldn't do such a thing whilst sober.
It was drunk dialing cos I did it as I was lying in bed, head spinning around.

BUT

It wasn't drunk dialing cos I wasn't drunk.
It wasn't drunk dialing cos I didn't call, I just sent an sms.
It wasn't drunk dialing cos it wasn't to an Ex asking her to take me back or that I loved her et cetera.

Oh well. I was thinking of something someone said to be earlier that night. And after lots of pondering, with consultation with Jaime, some lions from Ch11, and Tiger Woods on Ch24, I came to the conclusion that she was right. I had to let her know there and then. Hence drunk dialing???

Stikfas

I bought my first toy in many many years. I was walking around a shopping centre, waiting for a friend who was horribly late when I chanced upon Stikfas.

I think its a toy designed for men who haven't really grown up. It reminded me of Lego - which was popular at the time I was growing up, but its not Lego cos it has joints like normal humans have, and its more gutsy, in samurai, ninja or legionnaire models.

Can't seem to put it down, it sits on my computer table and I keep altering its poses. Ha. The bad thing about this is that you can't just get ONE. It seems lonely and in-active.

WARNING: I think its addictive. So be careful if you are going out to get one for yourself. Available in good toys shops and online here. Posted by Hello

The Fear of What Next

Over the past few weeks, we've learnt that our ruling political party is homophobic (Dr Balaji), sexist (no full Ministers in the Cabinet), economically driven (hence casino, screw all you religious moral people), have a warped sense of responsibility (only nucleus families can apply for HDB flats, single mothers have to count on their own families) but great showmen (suddenly the news if full of Ministers talking to youths and people - to show that they listen? Ah, but do they act on what they have heard?)

Dr Balaji wants to criminalise HIV. Yesterday's New Paper had the headline of "How to Turn a Blind Eye?" This is with reference to the approximately 100 wives a year who have no idea that their husbands have HIV. I say this is playing to the gallery (which according to a recent Appeals Court ruling, is not defamatory). Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry that wives have to go through life with husbands who cannot keep their cocks in their pants. So Dr Balaji - change something else, add a clause in the Women's Charter or something. It protects both the husbands and the wives. So if your wife decides to screw her boss without the condom, then husbands are protected too.

The question is if we allow HIV to be criminalised, if you are promiscious and don't take precautions we will jail you, then the question is why stop there? What about Hepatitis B, or STDs? Criminalise that won't you? I say it takes two hands to clap. So responsibility and fault should be shared by both the infector and the infectee. We know the Government loves to meddle with our lives in the bedroom - no sex other than missionary is legal, have babies or we will bombard you with flyers, but isn't this too much? Shouldn't a mature society be trusted to rule itself with condom use? I wonder.

Balaji is one heckofa showman. Says he said the ALL GAYS HAVE HIV comment to stir controvesy and conversation. Bloody hell, don't they have rights? How can you put your citizens into the spotlight for such a flippant reason? Why didn't he talk about all the imported "chickens" and their patrons instead?

So much about the Govt I dislike. So much more to write. But I'm afraid I'll bore you, and myself. What to do? Too bad I'm too apathetic to do anything, or rather, I'm afraid I'll be the next Joshua Benjamin Jeyaratnam. The nail that sticks out does get hammered in. Maybe the Worker's Party should consider redesigning their logo. Ha.

P.S. I'm not gay, just incensed at Balaji.

In Good Company

After theatre last night, which I attended with Rench and 2 hot babes (friends of his), we adjourned to S-11 for supper and a cuppa. The cuppa turned out to be bottles of beer, drunk in the comfort of a kopitiam, with football being shown live on the tele. (Now cannot say I atas already ah)

I had the best 'mind-blowing' (literally) exercise in a long time.

We talked. About theatre, life philosophy, love, the state of the world... It helped that I didn't know these girls that well, so I could be my obnoxious, biased, egoistic self. It helped that there was alcohol and there wasn't some loud music you were trying to scream over. It helped that Rench is a trove of random information and can quote verbatim from movies, books and anything else he has seen or read. Asimov, Hoffman, Kant... Did I mention that sometimes I feel stupid around him? What to do, he is a see-ko-lah mah.

But it was great fun, I loved the fact that the girls loved their Heineken, were open and liberal people. Were women who actually had opinions - and good ones at that. And more importantly, they were hot too. That helped in keeping eye contact.

We were probably the ones with the most intelligent conversations that night (haha. intellectual snobbery kicks in) And we drew weird stares whenever Rench or I suddenly raised our voices and proclaimed something like, "The End of the World is Nigh!"

But it was a great way to spend a Saturday evening. Theatre, and the company of good people.

P.S. In fact, my brain was so worked out by the opinions and thoughts shared last night that I couldn't sleep. Neurons must have still been buzzing. Might explain the woozy head this morning. Or maybe its just the alcohol. Posted by Hello

A Moving Theatre Experience in the Heartland

I was at Ang Mo Kio Central last night for theatre. Yes, you heard me right, theatre. In AMK. Dramabox was there with its run of Community Theatre. Normally I wouldn't bother because these shows are commissioned by some CDC and usually aim to educate the public on SARS, HIV or the like - political messages.

But when I heard that there were using Forum Theatre as their medium. I perked up. FYI. This form of theatre was banned in Singapore for over a decade because it is so emotive, so powerful and effective in reaching out to the watching audience that the ruling junta was afraid that it could be used to stir up the masses if used in a political context.

Forum theatre is a form where the audience can stop the play at any one time and step in to replace the characters. So like last night, when it was about problem children, we have members of the audience stepping in to replace the parents, one 10 year-old boy stepped in to replace the role of a violent tutor, because he has had that experience in school, et cetera.

The themes of these forum plays are usually close to the heart, like scenes of everyday life or indeed, politics. Hence it is always very effective to get a message out. It allows the audience to interact with the play, making it alive and ever evolving. No two shows are the same. It allows the audience to express what is on their minds, or their value-systems, to share an alternative view with the other people watching. To get minds working and to plant the seeds of thought into the audience.

It was a great experience, you should go see it, more detail on the
DramaBox website. Its in Chinese and dialect though, since DramaBox is a Mandarin theatre company. I'd never had expected such a great evening in the Heartland, and for free somemore. Haha. Where to find?

P.S. I forgot to add that all the stories about the troubled kids were true and they were acting themselves in the role. Sad to watch, but terribly moving.

West Wing

I love The West Wing. I love it for giving a glimpse into the life in the White House. I love it for its energy and tension. I love it for Martin Shee's brilliant potrayal of the POTUS. And most importantly, I love the way it makes me feel stupid. Sure I don't understand all of the politics on the show, neither am I able to catch all the dialogue because sometimes its so fast its a blur. But there is something special about the show, about how the characters think, and try to stay one step ahead of their political or physical opponents. That I like.

Now why does MediaCork have to show it at such an unearthly hour? Nebermind. Can BT. Posted by Hello

Sideways

A scene from the movie

It was a Friday night. It was one of those days where you just don't feel like going out, but was starting to get bored staying at home.

I rummaged through the DVDs I 'borrowed' from a 'friend from the North' and realised that I hadn't watched the movie
Sideways. It was given accolades for Best Cast in the Golden Globes, so it must be good.

So I plopped into bed and half an hour into the show, I started feeling very 'thirsty'. Watching the 2 men drink glass after glass of wine was really getting to me. Out came the Pause button and a quick scurry downstairs later, I was sipping a glass of red with the actors and nibbling little wedges of cheese in-between sips. That's the good thing about watching a movie at home. It was terrible wine mind you. Remind me to shoot the friend who bought me the bottle of Jacob's Creek Carbernet Savingnon. All together now... Urgh...

Anyway, about the movie. Like the actor said in the movie, it was quaffable. Nothing special. Looks like one of those movies TCS shows on a weeknight. No recognisable faces in the cast, predictable plot, the chemistry between the actors was so-so. Can't understand why it was said to be so good. Maybe its because I'm missing out on the 'big-screen' effect. Or maybe its just because it was an independent and this year, both the Screen Actor's Guild and the Golden Globes are rewarding independents.

Well, who cares anyway. It was quite a good way to spend a Friday evening.

Memories of Being Jack

My neighbour recently acquired a Jack Russell Terrier. They leave it to run the backyard, which as alright as it sounds, is actually not. JRTs require a lot of human contact and attention, they are more like living room dogs then yard dogs. So everytime my neighbour comes down to the backyard, the dog leaps into her arms, only to be told, "No! No jumping."

Oh well, thats a dog's life for you.

Seeing how JRT jumped everytime my neighbour appeared reminded me of the time when I was living with my Ex in University. Whenever I heard the key in the door, I would leap out of my seat, drop whatever I was doing and run to it. When she appears in the doorway, usually cold and red-faced due to the many things she would inevitably be carrying, I would take the things off her, her coat and then always, lift her up and twirl her around the room. I was that happy to see her.

Oh well, sometimes memories are all you can take with you... Its better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all. Right?

If You Have A Minute Today...

This is more proof that getting some action is good for you. Prevents dementia.

Relaxing With Jamie

There is something I find absolutely refreshing about watching the Naked Chef with Jamie Oliver.

Its a combination of his down-to-earth nature, his flawed speech with a lisp, his unassuming dressing that makes one take to him easily. He doesn't sound nor look like Nigella Lawson or Anthony Bourdain who have friendly dispositions, but somehow... distant. He keeps up a nice banter, giving us a peek into his life and at times, of him as a person.

His cooking is messy and like him, very down-to-earth. He notes the cost of the ingredients and is able to make the most delicious looking dishes at prices WE can afford. No macedamia oil, just Sainsbury's economy olive. He uses his hands, and spills things all over the place... very much like we do at home.

The best part is that he is always cooking for a party. And unlike most other shows, there is no one to taste the food but the chef. Jamie throws such fun looking parties, where everyone enjoys the food. It is the energy of the last 5 minutes, where they show the party that is the best part of the show. What can beat close friends coming together having a good meal with a good glass of wine? Nothing.

Thats why I like to watch the Naked Chef at the end of the day. It must be the best way to end your waking hours. Its showing at midnight on Channel 16 SCV.Posted by Hello

If Eddy Can Do It, So Can I?

Blogworld is bristling with the news that Eddy has a girlfriend. It has been browned and gonzo-ed. I wonder why everyone is so excited about the news?

Is it because everyone's happy that the under-dog has finally gotten something good? Or is it that with Eddy's success, it is proof that if one has hope, and a never-say-die perserverance, we will similarly succeed one day?

Nonetheless, I'm happy for Eddy, and his Boon Lay Girl. May Eddy get laid soon. Haha...

Long Lost Friends

I met with a long lost friend XB last night for a beer and catch up. I haven't seen him in about 4 years, but seeing us last night, it was as if I never left Singapore. We sat down, updated each other's lives, just like it was last week since we met last. We talked about how he has been with his girlfriend, Sophia for 8 years! About cars, about his job...

I'm not the most sociable person. I don't keep in touch with people, and expect people to call me instead. Thus, I've lost most of my friends from Secondary School. So I was pleasantly surprised when XB tracked me down through various sources (I had changed my mobile number) and called me up to meet. Friends like these are hard to find.

I should make more of an effort. Ha.

That Pepsi Girl

I've never wanted so bad to be a Pepsi bottle.

Her name is Mandy Fujiko Amano. New girl of Pepsi's Superbowl ads. Link courtesy of Kim. Though I do find it disconcerting when my female friends start sending me pictures of random girls. Haha.

One Heck of a Freaky Day

Today is one of those days where I can magically wish things to happen.

1. I thought of calling Ed for lunch and as I was changing, he called me first.
2. As I was in ColdStorage, I thought of a long lost friend XB, and how I was supposed to call him to meet up. He just called and we are meeting for a beer later.
3. I was thinking of how J never writes comments in my blog. And here she has gone and done it.

Now, all I need is to wish for a million bucks.... or a job.

Freaky.

When Reality Hits...

What do you do when life gets too much to bear? When you feel the need to get out of this reality, even for a brief moment, just to regain control of your sanity?

Do you...

1. Watch a movie, or veg in front of the tv. Looking at lives that aren't yours, and most likely, aren't real.

2. Have a drink, as alcohol numbs the brain.

3. Take a trip to somewhere, a beach resort, Europe, to live a different life even if its just for a week.

4. Retreat into a quiet space, with only you, yourself and a good book.

5. Do psychotropic drugs, which provide an alternative way to looking at things. Blue walls become pink and lizards become 3 feet long.

6. Have a cup of tea, and stare into space. Not thinking, not caring of anything that happens around you.

7. Sleep. When you brain shuts off but you can still go anywhere you want to go in your dreams.

8. ...

What do YOU do when life gets too much to bear? I was thinking about this as I was having a cup of tea late last night. Staring into the sky and the quiet of my estate. The air was still and most of the lights were off.

Me? Nothing beats a cup of tea.

The Loss of A Great Man

Is it only me or do non-Catholics also feel a sense of loss and sadness over the passing of the Pope, John Paul II?

Is it because of his courage even in th eface of his ill health? To have struggled to speak at Easter even though he had a tube in his throat, just because he had not failed to speak from his window in his 26 years as the Holy Father?

Is it because he was attributed to have played a major role in the fall of Communism? To have 'freed' millions from the confines of Marxist thinking?

Is it because he was the Pope who tried his best to reconcile the differences between the religions? To be the first Pope in a millennia to have asked the Jews for forgiveness in Jerusalem?

Is it because he was a living example of a good Christian. And did what would have been impossible for any normal man to have done - to ask for forgiveness and to forgive his assassin?

Sure, he had bad times. Like going against contraceptives and homosexuality with a vengence. Like turning a blind eye even when knowing that he had Priests in the US buggering little boys. But then, he was only human. We should look at the good at what he has done.

We have loss a great man. May he rest in peace. Posted by Hello

Good Advice

Punky was right.

Some people say that bloggers have no life, and hence live out their lives online. Punky disagreed and she was right. I've spent the weekend being a kai-lan at home, and hence have nothing to blog about, besides a time-stamped breakdown of the death of the Pope, courtesy of the Beeb.

On the need for self-censorship on the blog. I got a call from an old friend who lives in the UK today. He is an old friend because he is old. And hence does not usually get onto the Internet. But still he complimented me on my blog. WTF? How did he know the address? Damn Singapore, and its 3 degrees of seperation... Not that I mind that he reads it. Its just that I wonder how far it has gone. I just hope not far, and that people in Bristol don't find out about it.

Punky had written about watching what she wrote on her blog due to an influx of new readers. I advise her against it. Saying that it should be a personal space for expression. Need to go get ketchup now, to mask the taste of my foot as I put it in my mouth.

P.S. If you are the person who told the Old Man, please let me know.

A Recurring Dream

A recurring dream...

Its snowing outside and the room feels cold.
There is a gentle humming in the background, but that's only from the radiator.
We are under a thick duvet, our bodies close.
You push your back into my chest, closing the gap between us. As if any distance apart is too much.
I bury my nose into your hair, it smells fresh, like a meadow on the warm spring day.
You give a quiet sigh, as I take a deep breath of you.
I hug you tight, my arm just laying to rest on the flat of your stomach.
Finally warm, we fall asleep.

Mid Week Trip to the Boozer

Feeling a little 'thirsty', Ed and I decided to pop down to No. 5 Emerald Hill for a quick drink. We've never been there not least because its out of the way, but also because its usually so packed with people on the weekends that its just not worth going. That is unless you like the feeling of a fat sweaty tourist rubbing up against you.

Having heard of the chili-padi vodka shot that The Thirsty Traveller, Kevin Braunch tried, Ed was quite game to give it a go. He attempted to get me to do a shot with him, with all the ribbing of the male ego and how I should do it in the name of the 'brotherhood'. No way Jose, if there is one thing I've learnt from University, it's that drinking is the one thing that the male ego should have no part in.

Feeling slightly guilty because I was not doing it (and because I knew of the agony he was going to go thru later) I offered to buy him the drink.

It arrived and scarcely after it was placed on the table, he picked it up, threw his head back (and with what I thought was a grunt) poured the shot down the back of his throat. The next 5 minutes was painfully cruel to watch. His face turned red, eyes became bloodshot, started perspiring, and all this time, looking at me with wide open eyes, eyes that looked to confer the words that now could not come out of his acid-burned throat.

It was painful to watch, but also interesting in a morbid kind of way. Like how you watch a fly struggle as you pull of its legs one by one.

I told him to go behind to throw it up. He just sat there. Unmoving. Has the pain shut his brain off?

Then suddenly, with a big fat burp, he turned around and threw up all over the side of the table. Dinner, bar nuts and Southern Comfort & Coke came up all over the place.

Mental note: That drink is pure evil.

The staff were really cool about it though, it was as if they had seen it happen once too often. The mess was cleaned and we stayed for a few more drinks. I sat there, telling myself not to laugh in his face, not to bruise his already battered male ego... but I just couldn't help it. Haha.

P.S. Did you know that the staff in No.5 are Filipino, who are college students in Hospitality Management and are doing a 6 month job attachment in Singapore? How odd. Oh. And this one called Tiffany... vavavoom.

P.S2. There was this gal sitting right across me. In a black Adidas tracksuit and denim minis. She looked a mix of Fiona Xie and Linda Liao. Hotness. And she did not speak like an Ah-Lian. At least proper English but with a 'slang'. Too bad she was there with her boyfriend and his 4 other guys friends. If not, I would have gone up to say hi. Sigh...

P.S3 When I went to the Gents for a slash later that evening, someone had thrown up in the urinal. Yes. Chili-padi vodka.
