SMU

I spent the day with Sa in SMU. And I must say that it is the most beautiful of the local Universities. I liked the colonial feel to the place. With buildings with their original fixtures, gardens that if you close your eyes and imagined, you could probably see British colonists playing cricket...

It was quiet, peaceful and full of soul. Its a pity they are going to tear it down. Is nothing sacred in Singapore? Posted by Hello

i love SMU. yes, that's the catch line given but yes, i do love SMU. ok, not gonna go into all that..heh..essentially, a school environment/the architecture and all give schools an importance. it's an identity. or a soul like you said. without that, there is so much less meaning attached to it. personally, that's what i felt after 4 years.

I have no strong objections towards demolishing old buildings and creating new developments. I'm more of a progressive person i guessed. New developments /new infrastructures are inevitable. I know how beautiful historical buildings can be. But I would like to believe that along with time , these new infrastructures would be given new souls. Afterall, one of the reason that I enjoyed my stay in SMU was because of the tech-savvy infrastructure.

Imagine a Renaissance age building. With marble statues, columns, and all. Now imagine that instead of a big wooden door, you have a glass door. And that glass door is an automatic door. And imagine when you walk it, the floor is marble, the chandeliers are as they were from the Renaissance age, hanging from a high ceiling. But instead of candles, it has electric light bulbs, illuminating the entire space.

I have just described a police station in Paris (I think it's the headquarters for Paris). It's beautiful how they 'modernised' an architectural piece of art from the Renassaince era. The fusion of old and new was seamless.
