Political Commentary

If politics bore you, stop reading this post.

Minister of State for Defence and National Development, Mr Cedric Foo shocked the ruling party a week ago when he announced that he was leaving politics to return to the private sector. This came as a shock because he was part 0f the "Super Seven" rising stars who became junior ministers after the 2001 General Election.

The Party Chairman has tried to calm the murmurs and has commented that there is nothing surprising, with this being part of the natural 'turnover' of staff.

I question this though. In the last decade or so, there were only 2 'ministers' who have 'resigned' to return to the private sector. The last one being Mr David Lim. Coincidentally, he is now CEO of Neptune Oriental Lines, the same company that Mr Foo is joining.

I wonder if NOL is a 'cold storage' for 'retiring' ministers? NOL has always had a strong link to the ruling party. Our SM was there till he was convinced to enter politics.

What do you think?

P.S2> My rumour grapevine has hinted that there will be one more minister 'retiring' soon. Watch out for it. Hint: Goat

Were the 'Powers that be' really shocked? Is that your own personal opinion or was it something reported in the press? If it was, which paper was that?

About the bit about NOL. Well... it is open knowledge that a political figures, personnel from the ASU, after stepping down from office in the public sector are offered (and usually take up) jobs in GLCs. This is a fact that you can easily verify. (Don't believe, read the book "Shared Responsibilities, Unshared Power".) Whatever conclusions you want to draw from this fact, it is up to you.

"Shocked" was my personal opinion. And I know GLCs absorb ASU personnel, but why NOL for both minister-level people?

Anon - Why are you afraid of using your real name? Are you that scared that they might take a wrench to your face?
