Went to watch We Will Rock You on Sunday. The first half was a bit slow, unfamiliar, and quite detached from the audience (other characters other than the lead were in the limelight), but the second half, and especially towards the end, the energy was high... the pace was quick... and like a rock concert (even featured a guitar solo).

The lead Mig Ayesa had a great voice. =)

However, overall, I would say that this was not one of the better musicals I watched. But is still worth watching.

Feng Shui

My office was designed after serious consultant with a Feng Shui Master. That is why it incorporates a water feature (in an industrial building – seriously?). And the cubicles are not arranged so that they make sense. That is, instead of a flow through, there are certain blockages so people have to walk around to get to the other side. Oh, and my boss has a pot of gold illuminated by a light (which cannot be turned off) in his office.

Apparently, the Master said that our office used to be in a bad feng shui location. However, as land feng shui changes every 5 years, we moved in just at the right time. This period should mean great wealth and abundance for all in the company.

Which leads me to my point.

Every since I’ve joined my company, I’ve noticed that there is always someone here who is pregnant. We’ve just had 3 births, and I’ve noticed 2 more colleagues are now newly pregnant.

In a company of 50 (actually more, but they are engineers but they sit in the warehouse), that’s a very high proportion. I wonder if the Feng Shui has anything to do with it?

Sunday Times Reviews May Not Be Accurate

Ok, you know how the Sunday Life has a food review at the back of the paper every week? So, some of us colleagues went to this restaurant that was given brilliant reviews by the reviewer.

Food was rubbish. Bland for some dishes and too salty for the others.

I do agree that different strokes work for different folks, but really, everyone around the table agreed that the food was appalling. And expensive.

I'm never believing that reviewer again. Tsk.

He Aint Heavy... He's my Brother

I don’t know how it started, but everyone in my office uses the word “bro” to address the male colleagues and “sis” to address the female ones.

For an unsuspecting visitor, walking into our office might give them the impression that we are some ashram, an enclave of all the IT people who are seemingly “related” to each other. Or worse, that they have walked into some cult! *gasp*

The irony of this is that my company is pretty much a Taoist / Buddhist one, and there are not many Christians around. So no, I don’t think this started from the church going folk.

I might have written about this before, but I’m one of those people who do not use the word “bro” carelessly. For me, its an affectionate term for the select few whom I consider “family”. People whom you value as closer than normal friends, whom you trust their counsel, whom you rely on.

Ok, I am guilty of using the term carelessly once in awhile. I do use it to address some of the help, like waiters in a prata shop, the postman… but clearly, I do not mean it when I call them “brother”. Its just something I use to catch their attention. (much like a-neh, baiyi, abang)

And so, which is the point of this post, I’m getting increasingly irritated at my internal office emails, which start with “Hi Bro” or end with “Thanks Bro”.

I’m not your “bro”! And you aren’t mine either! Nor are you my “sis”, my “uncle”, or my “bitch”!

And the shitty thing is, I always address my colleagues by name, and they always reply with calling me “bro”! Grr…

I was a Scout... well, I am a Scout (once a Scout, always a Scout)

I went back last weekend to run the Scout leadership camp as well as a Gangshow where the old boys were invited as guests.

Burnt 2 days of leave, lost my voice... but had lots of fun and new experiences along the way. Here are some of the photos.

Men Just Want to be Evil

It is my honest opinion that most men want to be "evil". You know, the rampaging Neanderthal who eats raw meat, the gladiator who spills blood on his sword, the barbarian who pillages and sets fires to villages... you get the drift.

I think it all boils down to our genetic programing. So, ladies, don't blame us.

This post is inspired by a random thought that occurred to me whilst driving during this grey morning.

You know how a lot of people have stuck Transformers logos on their cars right? And these cars are mostly driven by men (the women stick Hello Kitty... sigh... but thats for another time).

The next time you are on the roads and spot a Transformers sticker, look closely. Is it a Decepticon or an Autobot? More likely than not, its the former.

I mean, it doesn't make any other sense otherwise. The Decepticons always lose; are the bad guys; and mostly make comical retreats. As boys we were programed to support the winning team and the good guys, right? (think G.I. Joe, who supported Cobra?)

Hence, the only reason I can think of, is that innately, men want to be able to pillage, beat their chests etc. =)

Reality Bites

Reality bites when you realise that your favourite drink blogger (a blogger who blogs about his drinking exploits) gets caught for drink driving.

Disappointed

At the quality of some of the teachers today.

Utter lack of commitment, too busy chasing their KPIs at the detriment to the welfare of the students, sitting in their ivory towers raining down torrents of demoralising words...

I have friends who are good teachers.

Am just disappointed in the few I have encountered in recent times.

Being a teacher is not JUST a job, it is a responsibility to your wards and the moulding of the minds of the leaders of the future. It takes a lot of heart, patience and resilience in the face of adversity to be a good teacher.

If you cannot stomach it, then please, for the sake of society, quit.

I know I cannot be a good teacher. But I'm sure there are those out there who can.

Am very very very very very disappointed.

Emails and Thoughts Arising from Them.

Just a random thought...

We do live by emails and instant messaging these days, don't we?

At last count, I send about 50 personal emails and 50 work-related emails on average per day. And I receive about 500 spam messages telling me when to buy the best Cialis /Viagra, Antique clocks and watches and tonnes of Nigerian 491 emails.

And thats not including the numerous instant messaging and sms that i send and receive daily.

Our world is now all about connectivity and instant gratification / response isn't it? This is perhaps why our lives do not slow down and many of us are getting burned out quicker.

This is also perhaps why our kids are "soft" and cannot fathom playing board games as opposed to quick response electronic games.

This is perhaps why the ladies are getting worse at cooking. (why cook when I can buy?)

This is perhaps why, with the great outdoors and miles of road around us, we run in a gym.

We are a product of the world. Don't blame us.

P.S. This post is inspired by an letter written in last month's Nat Geo, which I read. The writer wrote in to say that Nat Geo tells us to cut our carbon footprint, by doing small things like carpooling daily. The writer asked, so how many of Nat Geo's staff carpool? And take a train instead of an air polluting flight? We point and tell people to make a difference. It should start with us. =)
